There are a wide variety of volunteer opportunities at the Danby Volunteer Fire Company. If you are interested in pursuing this community service, please contact one of the chiefs or attend one of our monthly meetings.

Here are some of the opportunities:

Support Member

A support member fulfills a variety of tasks around the fire station, including clean-up, working at one of our fundraisers, providing food and drinks at extended incidents and any other support task that might need to be done. In general, they do not attend emergencies, and do not need to have a physical or specific training. This is the category for people who want to "help out" but don't want to be firefighters. There is always work to be done, and any help is appreciated.

Active Member

These are the firefighters and EMS personnel.

There are two subcategories of firefighters: interior and exterior.

Educational Requirements

The Danby Fire District requires that all volunteers meet a level of training that permits them to safely function as fire fighters. Within the first year of your membership, we ask that you begin to obtain the required training:

  • Incident Command Structure 100 (ICS 100) 3 hours.
Taught in-house annually or hosted by another fire company.
  • Incident Command Structure 700 (ICS 700) 3 hours.
Taught in-house annually or hosted by another fire company.
  • American Heart Association CPR course
Taught in-house annually; certification lasts 2 years.
If you want to become an interior certified firefighter, we require that you enroll in the 78 hour Firefighter I course.

If you do not want to become certified in interior SCBA use, but still want to take part in vital fire ground support, we request that you take the 27 hour Scene Support Operations course and the 16 hour Hazardous Materials First Responders Operations course. Locally, all courses are offered once or twice per year in Tompkins County as well as in Tioga County. Signing up for a course as soon as it is announced will help guarantee your enrollment as many have restrictions on the numbers of students permitted.

Volunteers that want to specialize in medical training instead of fire ground skills do not have to take fireground courses but can take the 51 hour Certified First Responder course or the 140 hour Emergency Medical Technician Basic course. These courses are offered by fire stations on a rotational basis, or at Tompkins County Community College or Cornell University.
